Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. HMG recommend the following to determine yours:

1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).

2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.

3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf" of your pelvic girdle. (It's the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.

4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.

Extra Small: (< 15.0" torso)
Small: (15.0" - 17.0" torso)
Medium: (17.0" - 19.0" torso)
Large: (19.0" - 21.0" torso)
Tall: (21.0"+ torso)

If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0" torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

The 55L pack can be rolled down to resemble the size of a 40L pack, but the extra volume proves invaluable when needed. Its versatility shines through in thick, vegetation-filled routes, where it can navigate up and over obstacles with ease. The Southwest’s main pack body is built with a new, fully woven Dyneema^® 200-denier fabric that offers more durability than ever before with the same signature lightweight and 100% waterproof qualities that have made Dyneema our primary material choice from the beginning.

The new Dyneema^® Woven Composite 3.9 combines the light weight of Dyneema^® Composite Hybrid 3.8 with durability and abrasion resistance that surpasses even the heavier Dyneema^® Composite Hybrid 5.9.
Redesigned shoulder straps and a sewn-through back panel provide a more comfortable and secure fit, with better weight distribution and less wear over time.
Redesigned outside pockets with more depth, lower back edges for easier access to water bottles, and improved security for gear (like the ice axe) make packing and accessing items more convenient.

Top Closure: Roll-top closure system with vertical compression straps allows you to adjust the pack's volume, keeping the load compact, stable and protected from weather.

Compression: Top Y-Strap provides compression and top of pack storage for gear.

Back Panel: An integrated 1/4” foam back panel pad adds cushioning and support for a more comfortable carry.

70L Back Panel: An integrated dual density foam back panel with plastic stiffener adds cushioning and support for a comfortable carry at heavier loads.

Hip Belt: Dual density foam hip belt, featuring closed cell foam and spacer mesh, provides comfort and support for long hauls.

Hip Belt: Hardline with Dyneema^® zippered pockets on the hip belt offer easy access to essentials, secured with a reliable #5 YKK zipper.

Stays: Two removable, contoured aluminium stays offer support and help distribute the load. Stays can be removed for additional weight savings.
