The Portal 1 rounds out the Portal family. It's the lightest freestanding tent with a minimum weight of only 1.12kg To make the Portal 1, we kept all our favorite aspects of the original 2-person Portal, but optimized the geometry and features for a solo hiker. What we DIDN'T do is eliminate any pockets or details that make the Portal series the most livable backpacking tents on the market.

To avoid the coffin-like feeling of many 1-person tents, we extended the Portal 1's cross pole so the side walls of the tent are beyond vertical, providing tons of volume and headroom up high. The extra long cross pole creates a super roomy vestibule with plenty of overhang when the vestibule doors are rolled back.

The 10D Nylon 66 Ripstop silicone-coated flysheet fabric is basically magic, with better UV resistance than fabrics three times its weight (read more about our UV testing here), super low water absorption (aka quick dry times), and incredible mold/mildew resistance. The silicone coating will not break down in your closet and produce that "old tent smell" that haunts well-loved gear. The 20D PE-coated floor fabric strikes a good balance between light weight and durability and doesn't absorb water, unlike PU-coated floor fabrics. It also has far more hydrolytic stability than PU coatings and won't become flaky and smelly with time. Pre-installed spare sliders on all the zippers double your zippers' lifespan and eliminate the need for half-baked field repairs when you're 90% of the way to the terminus of whatever long trail you're on.

About slingfin

SlingFin was founded in 2010 with one simple goal. Build the strongest, most innovative, no-expense-spared outdoor equipment in the world.

Slingfin represents the sum total of founder Martin Zemitis’ three decades of experience in the outdoor industry. After designing for The North Face and Sierra Designs for around a decade he co-founded Mountain Hardwear, where he designed equipment until 2009. Eventually he began to desire more freedom to design without the constraints of price targets and decided it was time to take things in a new direction. Soon thereafter, SlingFin was born.

Slingfin started making high alpine-focused dream tents that people on Everest would use as windbreaks for other tents. After a while, they realized the demand for shelters that can stand up to the elements extends well beyond the high alpine. Since then they’ve kept the strength-to-weight ratio of their tents at the forefront of their product development process. Choosing materials that improve the long-term durability of the products even if they’re more expensive, because they believe a good tent should be a long-term investment. Through thoughtful design, premium materials, and a deep understanding of tensile structures, Slingfin have created a full lineup of tents that can withstand much harsher conditions than other tents in their weight class.

SlingFin is an employee-owned, self-funded company. This means no suits, no “bean-counters”, and no pressure to maximize profit at the expense of quality. They’re small, lean, and scrappy, and they like it that way. Making the gear they want to use, not the gear a VC firm thinks will get them the best ROI. Their designs are inspired by the desire for stronger, lighter gear. Drawing on their deep industry heritage and passion for the outdoors to ensure that the materials, attention to detail, and build quality of their products are impeccable.
